Superelastic nitinol is capable of stretching up to 30% of its length without permanent deformation. Such incredible ductility, combined with a high yield strength, is a very special property of this alloy, explained by the fact that it is not an ordinary alloy. It is an intermetallic alloy – an alloy with a very precise ratio of nickel and titanium, which creates a high level of interatomic organization. This material is also known as fishing wire.

The composition is almost identical to our shape memory alloy, but this material is superelastic at temperatures above freezing and will not change its shape when heated. If you are looking for a wire that changes shape when heated, use the link above. Technically, superelastic nitinol has a very mild memory effect with a transition phase at about -10°C, so if you plan to use the material in a very cold environment, we recommend testing a sample to see how it behaves. It will become soft at approximately -15 to -20°C. If you need a wire that remains springy at such cold temperatures, for example, for fishing in the Arctic, you should try the -20°C alloy available here.

The wire has a shiny dark gray or dark brown color with a bluish oxide tint on the surface. When freshly cut, the inner core is nickel white. Nitinol is very abrasion-resistant and has self-healing properties, so the wire is quite difficult to cut and bend. It does not require any special care or protection from oxidation or moisture and is non-toxic.

Superelastic nitinol at room temperature and above is stiff and springy, similar to spring steel or piano wire. It is similar in mechanical properties to the lower transition phase NiTi alloy, such as our 15ºC SMA, but without the memory effect.
