It is the spinning reel that will determine how balanced and comfortable the gear will be. By definition, a high-quality spinning reel cannot be cheap.

Characteristics that are important when choosing

If you are planning to buy spinning reels, experts recommend paying attention to such parameters.

Weight

The weight of the rod on which the spinning reel will be used should be taken into account. Then it will be possible to find a balance that ensures the efficiency and comfort of fishing.

Standard size

Since there is still no worldwide accepted classification, the Shimano proposal is most often used; it marks spinning reels with numbers: 1000, 2000, 2500, etc. This indicator reflects the relative diameter of the spool.

Spool

Based on the material they are made of, spools are divided into:

• metal – made of aluminum, titanium and aluminum alloys, etc.;
• plastic.

There are several types of spool:

• regular – becomes a container for the entire volume of the fishing line;
• match – winds thin fishing lines without winding backing;
• conical – with its help it is possible to make long casts.

Capacity

This parameter shows how many meters of fishing line (depending on its diameter) the reel can hold. If the fishing rod uses braided line, the reel capacity is not taken into account.

Gear ratio

This parameter shows how many rotations of the rotor occur per turn of the handle. The larger it is, the faster the coil operates. According to the gear ratio, coils are divided into:

• up to 5.00 - power;
• 5.0 – 5.50 - universal;
• more than 5.50 – high-speed.

Number of bearings

To ensure smooth and stable operation of the reel, it uses bearings. You can read about how many roller or ball bearings are installed in a particular model in the inscription on the housing. Of course, expensive reels have more bearings and can last longer. However, you cannot focus only on this parameter - unfortunately, some manufacturers make serious flaws in the power mechanism. If you are offered a high-quality branded spinning reel that you can buy at a reasonable price, it will have at least 3-4 bearings.

Friction brake

The friction brake is needed to prevent the line from coming off if the fish on the hook makes sudden jerks. The spool will continue to release line until the load decreases. This mechanism not only allows you to save gear, but also protects the fisherman’s nerves. Based on where the friction brake is located, inertialess reels are divided into 2 types:

• front location;
• rear-mounted.

The first type is preferable for spinning, the second for feeder, carp and match fishing.

Beyrunner

The baitrunner is an auxiliary tool for controlling the speed of rotation of the spool. It complements the friction brake and is installed next to it. The baitrunner frees the fisherman's hands - he can leave the rod on the shore without the risk that the line will break during a powerful bite. The fish will take the line out of the spool as long as it takes for a person to react and hook. Most often they are installed on carp and feeder rods when the plan is to catch a predator with live bait. As soon as the fisherman starts to rotate the handle, the baitrunner will turn off automatically.

Maximum load on clutch

This parameter shows what maximum force is allowed without damaging the coil. Maximum Drag Power also provides insight into the maximum force that can be applied to the friction brake.

Spinning reel handle

The handle can be rearranged for left and right hands. Its mechanism can be:

• push-button – easy to use, but as it wears out, play increases;
• screw – more reliable.
